Laura Middleton is a contemporary painter whose work captures the quiet intensity and shifting atmospheres of the natural world. Working primarily in oil, her paintings explore local rivers, ponds and waterways found throughout the Cotswold landscape, where water becomes both subject and metaphor.

Born in South Yorkshire, Laura studied Illustration and Graphic Design at the University of the West of England before spending many years working as a specialist decorator. This background informs her highly developed sensitivity to surface, texture and layered construction. Now based in Oxfordshire, her practice is deeply rooted in place, drawing regularly from locations such as Rousham, Port Meadow, Blenheim and Asthall Manor.

Laura’s process is defined by a layered balance of structure and spontaneity. Each painting begins with a gessoed surface, creating a chalky ground onto which she works with charcoal and ink to establish composition and tonal rhythm. Vibrant inks often form the underpainting, introducing saturated colour that subtly permeates the final surface. Oil paint is then built up gradually, allowing earlier layers to breathe through and maintaining a sense of movement and fluidity.

Water is central to Laura’s visual language. Reflections, shifting light and blurred forms dissolve the boundary between sky, surface and riverbed, creating compositions where multiple planes coexist. Her work does not aim to describe a landscape precisely, but rather to evoke the experience of being there, the emotional and sensory resonance of a particular moment.

At the heart of her practice is a dialogue between outer landscape and inner state. While her work often conveys calm and clarity, it also reflects a deeper complexity, shaped by memory, emotion and observation. Her most recent paintings express a hopeful vision of nature, focusing on ecological restoration and the potential of waterways when treated with care and stewardship.

Laura Middleton’s paintings invite the viewer into a contemplative space, meditations on reflection, immersion and the subtle beauty of the world as it reveals itself over time.

Laura’s paintings are currently exhibited at a gallery in London’s Mayfair and are held in the Soho House collection. Her work is also sought after by interior designers, who are drawn to its atmospheric colour, layered surfaces and sense of calm.
