The River by Imogens Field

The River by Imogens Field draws the viewer into a sheltered stretch of water, where overhanging branches and their reflections merge with the river’s dark surface. Pale openings of light give the scene a quiet luminosity.

Deep greens and blue-greys surround passages of warm cream, peach and muted gold. The darker bank gathers across the upper part of the painting, while reflected light opens the water beneath it, creating a sense of depth within the enclosed scene. Branches reach diagonally from the upper right and reappear as wavering forms in the water. Their dark lines provide a loose framework, set against softer brushwork that blurs the boundary between solid surroundings and reflected image.

The painting finds its interest in the meeting of shelter, shadow and reflected light. Its close viewpoint brings the viewer into the river’s immediate surroundings, with little separation between the bank, the branches and their mirrored forms. The branching diagonals give the composition direction, while pools of pale colour keep the darker passages open. This balance creates a scene that feels secluded without becoming closed, drawing the eye between the shaded bank and the luminous water.

Painted in oil on canvas, the work combines softly blended passages with more distinct, directional brushmarks.
