Red Lamp

Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) · 1992

Red Lamp (1992) is a hand-signed lithograph by Roy Lichtenstein, rendering an ordinary domestic table lamp in the artist’s instantly recognisable graphic language: bold outline, flat colour and the disciplined visual vocabulary that defined his Pop Art practice for four decades. Lichtenstein takes an unremarkable household object and elevates it, through scale, colour and precision, into something iconic, the same transformation of the mundane that runs through his best-known work.

Produced in the final decade of Lichtenstein’s career, the print was issued as a benefit edition marking the thirty-fifth anniversary of Leo Castelli’s gallery, printed by Tyler Graphics and published by Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Each impression is signed and numbered by the artist in pencil; this example is number 28 from an edition of 250.

The work has a documented public history: it was included in El Pop en la Colección Gráfica de MBA at the IVAM Centre Julio González in Valencia in 2007, and is recorded in Mary Lee Corlett’s catalogue raisonné of Lichtenstein’s prints. For a collector building a Pop Art collection, Red Lamp offers late-career Lichtenstein, a documented exhibition history, and the accessibility of a hand-signed, numbered edition.

Why This Work Matters

Red Lamp exemplifies Lichtenstein's late engagement with the everyday: a domestic object translated into the bold, graphic language that made his work instantly recognisable. Hand-signed and numbered by the artist, with a documented exhibition history and secure attribution, it offers collectors an accessible entry point into an important body of late-career Pop Art prints.
