About the Work
An Industrial Town is a classic example of L. S. Lowry’s enduring fascination with the life, movement and atmosphere of the industrial North. Published in 1974, this hand-signed lithograph is based on Lowry’s original oil painting of the same title from 1944 and captures many of the qualities for which the artist is best known: smoking chimneys, mill buildings, streets, terraces and the steady flow of figures moving through the urban landscape.
Rather than presenting industry simply as a backdrop, Lowry gives the town a sense of rhythm and human presence. His distinctive figures animate the scene, while the factories, houses and chimneys create a carefully structured composition that feels both observational and timeless. The palette is characteristically restrained, allowing the architecture, smoke and movement of the crowd to carry the atmosphere of the work.
Lowry’s industrial scenes have become some of the most recognisable images in British art. They speak not only of a particular place and time, but of a wider social history: the working towns, factories and communities that shaped much of twentieth-century Britain. An Industrial Town is a particularly strong subject within his printed oeuvre, bringing together scale, narrative detail and the unmistakable visual language that made Lowry one of Britain’s most loved artists.
This example is signed by Lowry in pencil and numbered from the edition of 500, making it a highly collectible work from one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century.
