The Land Between I

Jennifer Newman (b. 1961)

The Land Between I is an atmospheric study of landscape built through material, memory and a strong sense of place.

Newman uses earth pigments, silver leaf and iron oxide to create a layered surface that suggests shifting ground, distant horizons and geological formations. The natural materials give the work a physical connection to the landscape itself, while the silver leaf introduces subtle changes of light across the surface.

The composition is intentionally open rather than descriptive. Instead of depicting a particular view, Newman evokes the experience of standing within a landscape and sensing its scale, depth and underlying structure. Shown together with its companion, The Land Between II, the pair develops a quiet dialogue between distance and materiality, with each work balancing broad areas of space against denser, more textured passages of earth and stone.

The work measures 75 × 75 cm and is presented framed and ready to hang. The larger scale gives it a broader, more immersive quality than Newman’s smaller studies, allowing the viewer to feel the sweep of the landscape as well as its physical structure. The result is a work rooted in landscape without becoming a literal depiction of it: a quiet, expansive study of earth, distance and belonging.

Why This Work Matters

The Land Between I demonstrates the strength of Newman's approach particularly clearly. Earth pigments and iron oxide create a direct relationship with the land being evoked, while silver leaf introduces a changing reflective quality that shifts with light and viewpoint.
