Direction of Travel
Direction of Travel is a semi-abstract landscape by Imogen Rigden, painted in water-soluble ink and oil on a cradled wood panel. A single dark, winding line traces a path across bands of ochre, lilac and rose, moving between passages of soft colour and denser, gilded texture toward the lower edge.
The painting belongs to a group of five new works completed for Ewan Macfarlane Gallery in August 2026. Rigden sketches outdoors but paints later in the studio from memory rather than direct observation, allowing accumulated impressions of water and weather to surface together rather than recording a single view.
Why This Work Matters
Part of a concentrated new body of work exploring water, coast and memory, Direction of Travel's meandering line captures the sense of movement and remembered journeying central to Rigden's practice.
