About the Work

Trailing Vines is an elegant and contemplative work by Oxfordshire-based specialist decorator Alex Smith, whose practice brings together traditional decorative techniques, craftsmanship and a contemporary approach to pattern and surface. Smith creates individual decorative panels for sale and to commission, often taking inspiration from the forms and rhythms of the natural world. He was responsible for the decorative renovation of Stowe House and has contributed to numerous other high-profile interiors.

Here, a cascade of rounded green leaves descends across a richly textured gold ground. The composition moves from the dense canopy at the top towards a single delicate, curling stem below, creating a graceful sense of growth and movement. Deep greens set against the luminous gold surface give the panel an almost jewel-like quality, while the generous areas of open space allow the composition to breathe.

There is an appealing tension between control and organic irregularity. Repeated leaf forms establish rhythm across the panel, yet subtle variations in their scale, colour and placement prevent the composition from becoming overly formal. As the foliage gradually thins towards the base, the work becomes quieter and more spacious, ending with the understated flourish of a curling vine.

The unusually tall format strengthens this sense of movement. Rather than presenting nature as a conventional landscape, Smith isolates a fragment of growth and allows it to unfold vertically. The result sits somewhere between painting and decorative art, drawing on established traditions of botanical ornament while feeling distinctly contemporary.
